Vanessa,

Vanessa (Taiwan)
I am a homeschooled student from Taiwan, and I have recently completed my first year in Life Sciences at the University of Toronto. This fall, I will be entering the Comparative Physiology Specialist program with a minor in Psychology.
Through the Borderless Education program and TVO ILC, I earned my Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) while studying independently at home. This flexible pathway opened doors to offers from the University of Toronto, University of Alberta, University of Waterloo, Queen's University ($10,000 scholarship), University of Ottawa ($50,000 in scholarships), and the University of Guelph, opportunities I couldn't have imagined when I started homeschooling.
One of the things I appreciated most about the OSSD program was the balance between academic learning and practical skill development. Through my courses, I strengthened my essay writing, presentation, infographic design, and digital communication skills, which have helped me successfully transition to university. The flexibility of the program also allowed me to pursue meaningful extracurricular activities, including volunteering as an administrative and counseling assistant at a medical summer camp for children in remote areas, tutoring other students, and participating in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Forum.
Throughout my journey, the Borderless team provided personalized support, from course planning and academic guidance to university applications. Looking back, homeschooling did not limit my opportunities. Instead, with the right support and direction, it allowed me to create a learning pathway that matched my interests and goals, while preparing me for success at one of Canada’s leading universities.
